The AFD Institute publishes Adaptive Flow Delivery (AFD), a delivery methodology for the AI era, and certifies practitioners against it. Its premise is simple: when AI makes building cheap, the advantage moves upstream — to understanding. The Institute maintains the method, the open glossary, and the templates that put it to work.
The AFD Institute is the standards body for Adaptive Flow Delivery (AFD) — a delivery methodology built for a world in which AI writes much of the code. For two decades, teams have treated rework as the price of building fast: a quarter of capacity spent rebuilding what was already built, because the wrong thing was understood too late. AFD names that cost and removes it. Its core idea, the Analysis Dividend, is that the cost of understanding a problem properly is almost always lower than the cost of building it wrong — and that when AI removes the cost of building, understanding becomes the only advantage left. The Institute publishes the methodology, certifies practitioners against it through scenario-based examination, and maintains the open glossary and templates that put it to work. It is a wholly EU-sovereign operation. Founded by Christopher J. Wilkinson, author of the book of the same name.

- When AI makes building cheap, the advantage moves upstream — to understanding. Almost no organisation has caught up yet, and that gap is the widest opening in delivery in a decade.
- The Analysis Dividend: every hour spent understanding the problem before you build pays back twice — as rework that never happens, and as capacity handed back to the team.
- Between 15 and 25 percent of an Agile team’s capacity goes to rework — rebuilding what was already built. AFD treats that as a defect to be engineered out, not a cost of doing business.
- The EU AI Act is not a documentation tax. Its obligations for high-risk AI — understand the problem, record the decisions, keep a named human in the loop — are a description of good delivery, not a burden on it.
- Certification you cannot fake: read the method, apply it on real work, sit a scenario-based exam. Professional level and above require evidence you have actually done it.
